Apathy is such a confusing term, well, for me anyway. I like to think of it as being ignorant. It’s not so much the fact that I don’t care about what’s going on because of why it is going on. It is more so the fact that I have not heard about what is going on.
For example, I am an avid smoker. I just recently read in The Penn that there was a meeting held on campus about the “problem” with smokers on campus. The meeting was held a few days ago. I would have attended but I was unaware of it until I read the article in the paper. This helps my point that it’s not the fact that people don’t care so much that they could be un-informed.
Granted, this generation is much less involved in social and political issues, but it is mostly the government’s own fault. Nowadays, if anybody protests anything, a police force is called out to start arresting those involved. It’s jut becoming too much of a nuisance to speak out for one’s beliefs. It also can come with negative repercussions, such as an arrest on one’s record.
Another example of why this generation may be viewed as being less involved is that people are not willing to make an effort to protest. Of course one voice can’t make a difference but thousands can. Yet, it is so very hard and time consuming to gather thousands of people into a group to fight for a cause. Everybody has their excuses like, work or school or families. All three of these are very great reasons for not risking anything by protesting. Again, going back to the arresting thing.
It’s hard for me to say that I agree with the article mainly because I didn’t see the argument. It was merely feeding me information. I understand that there is a problem but I couldn’t find any possible solutions in this article.

Ed, great point in the beginning of your entry about needing to hear about an event in order to attend. We need to rethink the way we advertise. For instance, my wife was getting low attendance at international events, so she started a facebook page and has more than doubled attendance since. We need to rethink the way that we reach peopl! Thanks!
