a charming story about a vietnamese family escaping hardships of life in vietnam to the charmed life in america. well the only thing bad about that is the severe cultural differences between the “american” culture and the vietnamese culture. the only reason i quoted the word american is because it is so hard to define. we are so diverse. but anyway, the story goes on to tell about how the narrator was striving for an american life. allthrough school she was very active in extra-curricular activities. then she went on to college and met the man who is now her husband.
there was quite an uproar because of this because the man is a white american. the cultural differences are oh so obvious. her parents were pushing for a traditional vietnamese wedding which the man had no problem with. yet there was a slight cause for panic about the wedding when her grandmother died. it is vietnamese tradition for the family to mourn for three years and can not get married until after the greiving. but since it was her grandmother she was told by her parents to conitnue on with the wedding plans.
